Minister of Oil and Energy Eng. Gadain Ali Ebaid, announced that energy production in Sudan, witnesses’ great challenges, which require exerting efforts to reform the defect inherited by electricity sector and looks for diversifying and developing renewable energies that become playing crucial factor in energy future.
This came when Gadain addressed the workshop on energy and sustainable development organized today by Al-Zaem Al-Azhai University under patronage of Ministry of Energy and Oil.
The Minister acknowledged that the cost of electricity production becomes high despite the fact that 60% of Sudan population is out of the grid coverage and 60 % of electricity provided to customers required improvement and stable supply.
He pointed out that producing3000 megawatts is costingUS$2billions annually, saying resolving the current situation is that the electricity requires developing laws to allow private sector enters into the competition of producing electricity.
The Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Mohamed Al-Amin said that the sustainable development is one of challenges that face Sudan since the independence.
He stressed that Sudan is not suffering lack of sustainable and renewable sources of energy but, it remains untapped.
He stressed that we live in an era of struggling over resources saying that “our role as academicians and technicians is to pave the way for reaching sustainable development.’
